Poor regurgitation of other movies in this genre

I am a huge fan of Hye-Soo Kim. I am also a big fan of this film genre. I am not offended by or have any problems with sex, violence, or explicit language. Based on those facts, it would not have been that difficult for this movie to get a high rating from me. But, despite strong performances by the main characters, I cannot give more than 3 stars to this movie, 2 1/2 for Hye-Soo Kim's performance alone. The problem with this movie was that it took the easy and obvious way out each and every time. The sequence of events was so cliched, formulaic, and predictable. It appeared to have all the elements of a very gripping and entertaining gangster drama, but instead, it delivered 1 1/2 hour of nonsense. The truth of the matter is all of the characters are criminals who have committed murder and various other serious crimes. The director's attempt to create sympathetic characters out of criminals fell way short of the goal. Even the action scenes are pretty ridiculous. Definitely not worth the time.

A Special Lady Review: Nothing "special"!

Movie: A Special Lady (18): Action/Crime - Korean Positives: - Kim Hye-soo steals the show with her stellar act and excels in some action scenes. Lee Sun-kyun impresses even more with his insanely terrific act. The action scenes are decently shot. The film is quite entertaining in its last 30 minutes. Some sequences at this time are really very well executed. The climax is quite good. Negatives: The film is very slow and the story takes too long to pick up, almost when it's too late.Editing is decent at 90 minutes, but it could've been edited even more as the first 30 minutes are a complete washout. Character development takes too long and the slow beginning was a major reason towards putting this movie on hold for long. The film drags in many portions and the action takes too long to happen. Repeat value: No A SPECIAL LADY is all gloss but almost no substance. Watch it for some decent action scenes and performances, but don't expect anything special.

It had potential, but ended up ultimately as a mediocre experience...

When I sat down to watch the 2017 South Korean action movie "A Special Lady" (aka "Mi-ok"), I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I found the movie by sheer random luck, and given my fascination and love for the Asian cinema, of course I found the time to sit down and watch this. While "A Special Lady" was entertaining enough, it just wasn't an outstanding movie. This was because of the storyline, it proved enjoyable enough, but it was lacked that special ingredient to make it outstanding or even making it memorable. Sure, there were some good and interesting enough moments here and there throughout the movie, but sadly they just drowned out in the abundance of mediocrity that permeated the rest of the movie. What works for the movie was the rather nice ensemble of casted actors and actresses. Just a shame that they had so very little to work with, truth be told. This is the type of movie that you will watch once, then never return to watch again. And the movie failed to make a lasting impression, despite of having some nice actors and actresses on the cast list, so the movie will just drift slowly into oblivion. I am rating "A Special Lady" a very mediocre five out of ten stars. This wasn't a particularly outstanding movie experience from writer and director An-kyu Lee.
